Effect of Teachers Utilization of Graphic Organizers on Pupils Retention in the Teaching of Basic Science

This research investigates the impact of teachers' use of graphic organisers on students' retention in fundamental scientific education within the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The inquiry was guided by two queries and two null hypotheses. This study used quasi-experimental descriptive survey research designs. The population included 1,250 UBE 3 students and 676 instructors. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to choose samples of 53 youngsters and 50 instructors. Two separate groups were established: the control group and the experimental group. The instruments used for data collection were the Basic Science Academic Performance Test (BSAPT) and the Graphic Organisers Teachers’ Questionnaire (GOTQ). The reliability coefficient is 0.76. The Mean and Standard Deviation were applied to answer the study issues, while the Independent Sample Test Statistics were utilised to evaluate the hypotheses using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 15.0). The study's findings indicated a notable difference in average scores between the experimental and control groups, with the experimental group demonstrating enhanced performance. A significant differential was seen in the mean scores of children using graphic organisers; however, no notable variation was detected in the mean scores of male and female Basic Science students subjected to graphics as a pedagogical method. The research proposed, among other methods, the use of graphic organisers for instructing both tangible and abstract ideas to students in early elementary school.
