Abstract

A laboratory experiment was conducted to study the concentrations of important chemical elements that cause high salinity in the waters of this river. These ions and cations are calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, and sulfates during the winter season (December-January-February) and the summer season (June-August-July) for the areas located in the north of river, namely al-Qurna - Paper Factory, and between the areas located in the south of it, namely al-Faw - al-Naqa. The study showed the great variation between the concentrations of these elements between the summer and winter seasons and between the north and south of the river. The lowest rate of the elements (Ca-Mg-Na-Cl-SO4) was recorded during the winter season as follows: (73.5-30.7-154.0-369.6-136.3) mg.L-1, while the summer season the concentrations were as follows: (479.0-1252.5-3255.9-7861.9-2535.2) mg.L-1. The southern regions of the river were also characterized by high concentrations of chemical elements, while the northern regions were characterized by low concentrations, as follows: al-Faw, al-Naqa'a, Paper Mill, and al-Qurna.
