The Effect of Adding Taurine Levels to Frozen Ram Semen on Some Semen Properties

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of varying levels of taurine supplementation on the quality of frozen ram semen, addressing the limited data on taurine’s role in preserving sperm integrity during cryopreservation. Semen samples collected from rams were diluted with extenders containing 0, 2, 4, and 6 mmol of taurine and stored at –196°C for one or two months. Evaluations included the integrity of the acrosome and plasma membrane, as well as levels of enzymatic antioxidants (CAT and SOD) and oxidative stress indicator (MDA). Results showed that the 4 mmol taurine treatment (T4) significantly preserved acrosome and plasma membrane integrity and enhanced CAT and SOD activity while reducing MDA levels, particularly after one month of storage. These findings suggest that taurine, at optimal concentration, can effectively mitigate oxidative damage and enhance the viability of cryopreserved ram sperm, offering promising implications for improving artificial insemination outcomes in livestock production.
